Location and transport accessibility:
The town of Sliven (population 110 240 people, 270 m
above sea level) is situated in the eastern part of the
Gornotrakiiska valley at the immediate foot of Sliven
Balkan (Eastern Balkan Mountains). Sliven is located 270
km east of Sofia, 28 km northwest of Yambol, 70 km
northeast of Stara Zagora, 75 km east of Kazanlak and
114 km west of Bourgas.
The mountain place Karandila is located northeast of
Sliven, among century-old forests. Here one will
discover National Park “Sini Kamani”, where there are
many interesting rock formations such as Halkata (the
ring). The area offers excellent opportunities for rest,
sports and tourism. There are ski-tracks with two ski
tag lines, a football field and a lake. Karandila is a
point of departure for a number of well-marked tourist
and eco-trails.
From Sliven there are regular bus lines to the towns of
Yambol, Nova Zagora, Karnobat, Aitos, Bourgas, Elena,
Veliko Tarnovo and to the smaller villages and
settlement in the district. The town is a major railway
station on the main railway line Sofia – Karlovo –
Bourgas. There is a well-arranged bus and trolley
transport in Sliven.
The seat-lift station located in the northern part of
the town, immediately at the foot of the mountain will
take up to more than 600 m everyone who is willing to
roam the Sliven Balkan.

KOTEL
Location and transport accessibility:
The town of Kotel is situated in a picturesque small
valley in the eastern part of the Balkan Range, 527m
above the sea level. It is 328km east of Sofia, 49km
northeast of Sliven.
Kotel is not only a place with majestic nature, fresh
air, and pure mountain water, but also an important
cultural and historical centre. It is called the
Stronghold of Bulgarian spirit, Cradle of the Bulgarian
Renaissance. The town is a native place of a number of
eminent National Revival figures: Georgi Sava Rakovski
(one of the main ideologist of the movement for national
liberation), the Renaissance men of letters Neophyte
Bozvelli, dr. Petar Beron, Sofroni Vrachanski, the
socially active men Gavril Krastevich, Aleko Bogoridi,
Stefan Bogoridy and many others.
Kotel is a town with beautiful architectonic models from
the late Revival and one of the most important centres
of weaving art. Its rich history, Renaissance
architecture, and marvelous vicinity make this
picturesque Balkan town a desired place for national and
international tourism.
There are regular bus lines from Kotel to Shoumen,
Sliven, Yambol, Veliki Preslav, Targovishte and other
villages and towns in the district.

Zheravna is a little village located in the middle of
the eastern part of the Stara Planina, at an altitude of
640m above the sea level. It is situated 14km south of
Kotel, 110km northwest of Bourgas, 190km southwest of
Varna, and 330km east of Sofia.
The climate is transitional with mild winter and
pleasant summer. The region of Zheravna is very
picturesque – high peaks, fantastic rocks, and wide
green glades.
The very good geographic location and the mountainous
relief offer wonderful opportunities for tourism.
Excursions, picnics, fishing, Eco-path excursions and
many more are the possibilities there. In Zheravna you
will find great holiday conditions, pure beauty,
coziness, and intimacy.
Hidden in the arms of the Sliven Mountains, with its
enchanting natural beauty and spirit, Ichera is the new
treasure of this region, which is also famous for a few
other popular tourist destinations like Jeravna, Medven,
Kotel and Katunishte.
An old folklore legend tells that Simeon the Great gave
this village to his most trusted servant as a sign of
his gratefulness. Later on he visited the place
frequently, to go hunting and to enjoy the sight of some
of the most beautiful women he had ever laid eyes on.
Ichera has been called “The king’s retreat” since
ancient times, when it was a favorite spot for wealthy
landowners and warriors. The clean mountain air and
beautiful nature make this area place unforgettable.
Magnificent woods and green grass loans full of flowers
and herbs surround the village.
